Plunge Pool Benefits for Kiwi Homes: Wellness, Family Time & Easy Maintenance
21 December, 2024
At Sapphire Spas, we’re inspired by the restorative potential of natural plunge pools. We created our range of plunge pools so you can access these benefits at home.
Let’s explore how an above-ground plunge pool can be a therapeutic and aesthetic addition to your home and lifestyle:
What is a Plunge Pool?
A plunge pool is a compact, deep pool designed for relaxation and hydrotherapy, rather than swimming laps.
Ideal for homes with limited space, plunge pools offer a stylish and functional wellness option that’s very accessible.
At a depth of 1300mm, Sapphire plunge pools offer this activity with a basic jet layout for hydro massage and two swim jets for gentle mobility, exercise and kids splash and play.
If you want to swim against the jets, have a look at our powerful swim spa range.
Plunge Pools
Plunge Pools
Our plunge pools have been developed from our two most popular swim spa shapes; myWatersedge and myWorkout.
myWatersedgePLUNGE has a shallower, wider step area, perfect for toddlers, and a large open pool designed for wading, light exercise, and cooling off.
myWorkoutPLUNGE has more jets in the massage seats and also an open pool space for splash and play.
We've built our plunge pools to provide the benefits of hydrotherapy while reducing the number of jets and pumps, making them more affordable than fully jetted swim spas with up to 4 pumps.
With a smaller footprint than traditional swimming pools, our plunge pools maximise your outdoor space while providing plenty of room for relaxation and recreation.
Here’s an example of a plunge pool seamlessly embedded into an outdoor deck:

Enjoy Year-Round Comfort
With the option to heat the water just like a spa or swim spa, you can extend your pool season and make the most of every moment, regardless of the weather.
Just be aware that the cost to run a spa pool in winter can be around $10 to $20 per week, depending on the size of your plunge pool, your location, energy rates, and how often you’re using it.
To minimise energy costs during winter, invest in a spa cover or thermal blanket to reduce heat loss and retain the warmth of the water. Regular maintenance can also help ensure your plunge pool is running efficiently and not wasting energy.
Healthy Family Time
Plunge pools offer a refreshing outdoor alternative for family bonding – away from those screens!
Our plunge pools, like the myWorkout5.0mPLUNGE, come with adjustable swim jets, providing children with endless entertainment.
Here's a review from one of our client’s children that captures the essence of healthy family time with our plunge pools:
“'I love going to the beach, but Mum & Dad only took us a few times last summer because it was too cold! Now my baby sister can play on the steps with Mum while Dad & I play water games in the deep end'”.
Backyard Exercise
Staying active becomes effortless with a plunge pool just beyond your back door. The integrated swim jets from plunge pools like the myWatersedge6.0mPLUNGE provide gentle resistance that is ideal for aquatic stretching and flexibility exercises.
Whether walking or running against the current, every movement becomes a workout for your legs and cardiovascular system.
Keep Your Mobility
Staying active and getting the necessary cardio exercise starts getting challenging as we age.
A plunge pool can help significantly by providing support and relief, especially when it's tough to move around or exercise to keep your heart healthy.
Our myWatersedge SERIES are designed with wide steps for safer assisted entry. Additional grab rails can be mounted for extra safety.
Being buoyant provides much-needed support for joints and muscles, allowing movement that would otherwise be difficult without floatation.
As cold water therapy becomes more popular, luxury cold plunge studios are popping up everywhere in New Zealand.
But you don’t have to spend money at a fancy studio to experience a cold plunge; you can experience the rejuvenating effects right in the comfort of your own home with a Sapphire Spas plunge pool!
Adjust the temperature to between 10°C and 15°C, the ideal temperature range for cold water immersion therapy.
If you're keen to drop the temperature even lower, have a look at our mySpaICE; our new purpose built ice bath which is ready to use 24/7 / no need to empty or add bags of ice / set temperature from 5-40 degrees for ice bath or warm water hydrotherapy.
With a plunge pool at home, you can incorporate cold plunges into your daily routine and experience enhanced circulation, boosted metabolism, and improved overall well-being – all in the comfort and convenience of your own home.
Accessible Swimming Lessons
Plunge pools offer a safe and controlled environment for swimming lessons, perfect for beginners of all ages to develop confidence and proficiency in the water.
With its compact size and integrated seating, a plunge pool provides the ideal setting for personalised instruction and practice.
Master new swimming strokes and see your skills thrive in the comfort of your backyard retreat.
Easy Maintenance
Thanks to their compact size, plunge pools require less water and fewer chemicals, slashing your maintenance costs.
Plus, they're energy-efficient, needing less power to heat or cool.
Plus cleaning is a breeze! With less surface area to cover, you'll spend less time scrubbing and more time relaxing.
